How much does a professional coach cost?

A reasonable question. But this shouldn't be your first, or only, question when looking for the right coach.
Understanding the value of coaching rather than the cost must logically be the first step. You see, if I asked you what you wanted to achieve by working with a coach, would you know the answer?
What if I asked you how much your dreams, goals and ambitions cost? Are you able to put a price on those things?
If you are making a significant investment in yourself you want to know what you are going to get for that investment, right?
I get that.
Take a step back for a moment.
If you’re asking about the cost of coaching at the start of your coaching journey, then you’re starting with the wrong question!
Perspective and the cost of services.
Think about how much you pay to get your car serviced – between £150-£600 a year depending on the car? Usually, labour charges are between £60-£100 per hour. But you have to pay that, right? What about your hair cut, coloured and styled? About £160-£900 a year depending on whether you’re male or female?
Now, let’s get a bit closer and look at some other one-to-one consultations. A solicitor, accountant or financial advisor? A private nurse, doctor, or consultant? For each of these services, you are paying for their time, expertise, experience and skills. Coaching is no different. You’d want someone who knows what they were doing. Someone you could talk to who understood you. Someone accredited, experienced and qualified?
Now you’re getting a bit closer to finding a better question!
With coaching, the focus is on you. And only you.
Let me ask you a few questions.
When did you last take a good look at what is going on in your life? I mean the nuts and bolts, everything?
A self-appraisal of where you are, right now, with an objective and independent professional?
Someone who encouraged you to be fair with yourself and look honestly at what is in your control. Someone who supported you to find new ways to change the things you want to change, once and for all?
You are the expert in you, I am the expert in the coaching process. Working together we can discover what is really holding you back and look at strategies to fix the things you want to fix. This might be your self-esteem, confidence or beliefs you hold about yourself that might not be true.
Your passion or creativity may be just sitting there, waiting to be discovered. Just a few sessions with a coach and you could be delivering that great presentation, applying for that promotion, nailing that interview or packing it all in and doing something completely different. The great resignation has arrived, are you ready? What is it worth to you?
So, what if the next big transition for you was out there and you just needed a bit of encouragement, support or a boot up the backside to get your act into gear and do something about it? When you are investing in developing yourself you are making a priceless investment in your future. You only have one life so come on – how much is that worth to you?
Now ask yourself: how can you afford not to have a coach?
So, what are the right questions to ask when finding a coach?
Try questions that will help you develop your understanding of coaching. Something like these:
How do I know you’re the right coach for me?
How does Coaching help?
Are you qualified, experienced and accredited by an external professional body?
What do people who have worked with you say? (You can read my testimonials here).
What is your coaching approach?
Why did you become a coach?
